According to new research grassroots movements can help shift how we think about recycling and the growing issue of garbage. Dare Sholanke, a recent geography master’s grad, studied Vancouver’s waste governance system, examining binners' (informal recyclers) and the role of grassroots organizations in municipal waste management. Centre for Global Studies, Univ. of Victoria


We are happy to announce that Dr. Jutta Gutberlet and Phd student Maeva Gauthier are Fellows at the Centre for Global Studies this year. The Centre focusses on a mandate to promote collaborative, multidisciplinary, and cross-regional research and engage in connecting research in the field of global studies to local, national, and international communities. As such, CFGS is uniquely positioned to bridge academic research and student mentoring with knowledge mobilization and effective community engagement. The Centre awards fellowship to advanced graduate students, international scholars, and faculty researchers. Fellowships applications are open until Nov. 15, 2019.

International Waste Management and Landfill Symposium, Sardinia

Between September 30th and October 4th, 2019, Jutta Gutberlet participated at the 17th International Waste Management and Landfill Symposium in Santa Margherita di Pula, Cagliari, Italy, and presented the paper: Grassroots innovations in waste governance addressing sustainable development goals. This interdisciplinary conference on waste management brought together scholars, practitioners, government and industry from the sciences and social sciences discussing environmental, economic and social aspects related to a great variety of waste issues, ranging from waste challenges in global South cities, food waste, waste and disaster situations, mining waste, textiles and the impacts of microfibers and nanoplastics accumulation in the environment, gender perspectives in waste management, education and awareness, responsible production, consumption and waste management among many other topics.

International Conference on Public Policy (ICPP4), Montreal

Jutta Gutberlet presented a paper at the ICPP4 in Montreal June 26-29, 2019 with authors Klaus Frey and Pedro Roberto Jacobi in the panel Urban Environmental Governance and Policy in Metropolises of the Global South session. The paper is entitled: Urban Environmental Governance and Policy in Metropolises of the Global South and an overview can be accessed here.

International Sustainability Transitions Conference 2019, Ottawa

Jutta Gutberlet contributed to this conference from June 23-26, 2019 and presented the paper: Governance of Sustainability Transitions in Cities of the Global South – whereto, by whom, how? The abstract can be found here.

UN Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy Conference, Geneva

On 25-26 June 2019, the UN Task Force on Social and Solidarity Economy (UNTFSSE) organized the International Conference on Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals: What Role for Social and Solidarity Economy?, taking place at the International Labour Office in Geneva. In the past months, we had the chance to reflect upon the presentations and discussions, draw conclusions from them, and engage in dialogue with speakers and moderators for recommendations. We are proud to now present you the result of this work in the UNTFSSE Conference Summary, newly published on the SSE Knowledge Hub for the SDGs, where you will also find all presented papers and slides.

The main objectives of the conference were to:

• understand SSE development in different regions and territories;
• examine the role of SSE as a means of implementation for the SDGs in diverse local contexts; and
• identify robust methodologies and innovative solutions for measuring SSE and its impacts.
