AVEMARE Cooperative: Towards an inclusive and sustainable waste management

This production is part of a series of videos on social innovations made by waste pickers and aims to disseminate experiences from Argentina, Brazil, Kenya and Tanzania to contribute to the discussion on inclusive and more sustainable models of waste management and governance.
Beyond Gramacho
Beyond Gramacho discloses the socio-economic and environmental conditions, struggles and opportunities that are present in informal resource recovery. Over 1800 recyclers (called Catadores in Brazil) were working day and night at the landfill and neighbouring recycling cooperatives, recovering recyclable materials from the waste stream, before its closure in April 2013.

Celebrating waste pickers! Celebrando Catadoras e Catadores (PORT)
No dia 12 de agosto de 2023, comemoramos os primeiros 22 alunos e alunas que concluíram o primeiro dos seis módulos do curso: "Governança inclusiva de resíduos sólidos para uma sociedade sustentável e justa". Mais de 150 convidados, incluindo líderes da comunidade de catadores, representantes do governo, professores universitários, representantes de diferentes organizações não-governamentais, um representante do programa de capacitação para catadores da Argentina e muitos amigos da comunidade de catadores compareceram a esta celebração.
Recycling Networks Project in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
The Conference on Recycling Networks and Waste Governance in Dar es Salaam brought together organizations of waste pickers, waste processors, intermediaries, local governments, academics, policymakers, and technical experts to exchange views, models, experiences, and practical lessons regarding the sustainability of waste collection and processing.
KIWAN Obunga Community Project, Kenya
In April 2018, members of the Kisumu Waste Network (KIWAN) and the Obunga Residents Association participated in a 5-day PV workshop to explore and document challenges and social innovations in waste governance in their community. This video, filmed and edited by the community participants, documents some of the challenges as experienced by the resident in Obunga related to waste management. The video also highlights the social innovations and collaboration of residents working together to make their community safer and cleaner.

International Conference on Transformative Education for and with Waste Pickers: Co-creating a Popular Pedagogy | 05/16/2025 and Workshop 05/17/2025 We held this Conference and Workshop on Popular Education with the aim of co-creating a popular pedagogy. In this event we had the opportunity to debate and co-create new elements for a contextualized education focused on the specific needs of waste pickers in Latin America.

O projeto Redes de Reciclagem e Governança de Resíduos Sólidos organizou uma conferencia em Dar es Salaam reunindo organizações de catadores e de reciclagem, processadores de resíduos, intermediários, governo local, acadêmicos, formuladores de políticas públicas e técnicos para trocar ideias, modelos, experiências e lições práticas sobre sustentabilidade, coleta de resíduos sólidos e redes de reciclagem para cidades inclusivas e sustentáveis.
